Multidisciplinary architectural practise ARUP were tasked with overseeing the development and expansion of Manchester Airport Terminal 1 and the largely new build terminal 3 – as part of a 10 year re-development scheme, which saw their team provide a full engineering design service for both; to expand the transport infrastructure at the airport.
As part of this project, The Light Lab were commissioned by Arup Lighting to manufacture bespoke exterior illuminated handrail & linear lighting across the airport bridge; with our specialist team also completing full installation onsite.

The Light Lab manufactured our LED integrated handrail system ‘Glowrail‘, to provide a functional and sleek handrail to the stairways on each side the bridge, along with our linear inground Glowline fittings across the full length. The installation provides a warm and consistent glow to the CorTen Steel structure creating a visually effective feature whilst also lighting sufficiently to ensure a safe and comfortable experience.
