We’re delighted to see the David Oluwale Memorial Bridge shortlisted in this year’s DARC Awards in the ‘Structures – High Budget’ category.
With design led by Fabien Le Dem of Mott MacDonald, The Light Lab were brought onto the project to fabricate & install our bespoke low iron, toughened Spectrglass panels, across the 28m span of the bridge.

Lighting designers can vote now until 1st March on the DARC Awards platform.

As Mott Macdonald’s describe how they developed the concept of the iconic Leeds Owl in ‘dynamic flight’ across the bridge – ‘a concept and motif that has become integral to the bridge, and lighting design. It has been about using the city icon and combining it with the story to develop an art concept based on ‘positive energy, movement and life. The iconic Leeds Owl has therefore become no longer a static bird but a flying nocturnal specie along the bridge after dark, with the artwork concept revealing the owl at night-time as part of the bridge crossing experience. We worked with manufacturer The Light Lab to develop the balustrade graphic, integrate the luminaires, supply glass panels and supply and commission a lighting control by Architainment Lighting Ltd
