St Paul's

Place, Sheffield

interactive, exterior lighting feature

The Light Lab were asked to design and build an interactive lighting feature to add a sense of fun to a stairway leading to a busy public square in the centre of Sheffield.
We fabricated custom housings for radar sensors that were then fixed within the existing stairway bollard lighting. Each of these radar-sensors triggers an independent RGB LED that is sunk into the individual step, adjacent to the sensor.
Members of the public trigger each sensor in turn as they climb the stairs, creating instant illumination on the building and leaving a trail of fading light in their wake.
The colour and functionality changes subtly throughout the evening (and from day to day on the lunar calendar) so a new individual experience is created each time.
